Medical Deep Tissue
Medical Massage Certification Program
Q: What is MDT?
A: Medical Deep Tissue (MDT) is a medical massage certification program designed by Dr. James Macie,DC.
Our Story
The MDT program created by Dr. James Macie was first developed as a medical massage intern training program at his musculoskeletal center in upstate New York in 2000. As the center became a success, Dr. Macie continued to work building various lessons to educate massage therapists in medical massage. Through the years, he has worked to pull together the best education in the field and combine it with his clinical experience to create an evidence-based medical massage program. While this program is currently under development, many classes are being “tested” in San Antonio, Texas. Official launch is to be expected in January of 2025.

MDT Founder/Developer
Dr. James Macie, DC, LMT
Dr. James Macie, DC is a chiropractor, massage therapist, and nutritional scientist known for his work in the field of integrative health. For more than two decades he’s been a trailblazer in the field of structural biomechanics and natural healing. He has combined his clinical experience with his years of education to develop and teach many specialized forms of structural protocols—including the Structural Release technique and the Medical Deep Tissue technique for massage therapists.
A highly successful entrepreneur, Macie founded and led the Structural Release Center in New York. The center incorporated the modern-day sciences of structure, it’s biomechanics, and how to rebuild and balance the body through various alternative modalities. The center provided the vehicle for Macie to develop and share his techniques focusing on his three-dimensional approach: chiropractic, medical massage, and functional nutrition. He continues to be an innovator in the field of integrative health by researching new areas, developing structural protocols, and sharing his clinical experience and wisdom with his colleagues.

Q: What are the MDT Core areas of study?
A: The MDT curriculum is divided into four core areas of study: MDT Protocols, Clinical Assessment, Clinical Applications, and Clinical Practicum.
MDT Protocols
The backbone of MDT program is the step by step process to systematically work with each new client. Our program offers the necessary steps and protocols needed to elevate the therapist’s knowledge of the body, and to ensure them the confidence to work within an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals.
Clinical Assessment
The keystone to creating an outcome-based treatment is the ability to assess each patient’s needs. We focus on educating the therapist in various ways to systematically access each patient. Each therapist practices these skills in class, on patients, and is refined by their assigned mentor.
Clinical Applications
Having the right tool and knowing when and how to use it is an integral part of the MDT program. We teach the most commonly needed area-and fiber-specific techniques for each structural dysfunction. Our goal is to give the therapists the needed training and tools for each patient.
Clinical Practicum
Students of the MDT program are required to practice their skills on real patients and then submit their notes for review. Each student is assigned a MDT mentoring therapist to assist them in the learning and integration of medical massage into their practice.
Q: What are MDT elective classes?
A: As therapists progress through the MDT program they are given the opportunity to “specialize” in various areas of advanced study.
Anatomical Sciences
For the therapist whose passion is Anatomy, we offer a specialized study track in Anatomical Sciences. Therapists begin with medical terminology, general study of the musculo-skeletal system, neuro-anatomy and then progress to various cadaver classes.
Business Marketing
For therapists looking to start a new medical massage business or has an interest in taking their present business to that next level we offer an elective track in business. Classes begin with basic start-up princapals and progress to more advanced areas like best business practices, insurances/billing and, marketing/networking.
Clinical Applications
For therapists looking to increase their assessment skills, fill their toolbox, or increase their mastery of specific medical massage techniques, we offer the specialized study of Advanced Techniques. Therapists have the opportunity to choose from various approved modalities.
Integrative Health
For therapists looking to study the science behind various eastern and western philosophies of holistic health and their value to their present clients we offer an elective track of Integrative Health. Some of the various areas of study are: nutrition, oriental philosophy, energetic modalities, chiropractic principals, fitness, and physical therapy.
Q: What is the MDT Practicum and Mastery System?
A: The MDT program has integrated areas of professional support to assist in the education and development of each therapist. Each track has various required areas of practical experience which is then reviewed by their MDT mentor.

Coaching
Your success is our success. Therefore, we have integrated MDT mentoring into the MDT program. Each therapist is paired up with an experienced MDT therapist who will review the students progress with their clients. Each student can then receive personalized attention to assist in building their confidence as they progress through their practicum and case management.
– Medical –
Practicum
We feel that the education of a medical massage therapist should follow the same path of all healthcare professionals. Therapists are required to complete a specific amount of practical work on real patients and submit their clinical notes for approval/credit with their MDT mentor.
– Awesome –
Mastery Groups
The best way to continually grow in your field is to stay connected to your peers. The MDT program sponsors monthly mastery meetings. These meetings are designed to keep the therapist updated on the latest buzz in the medical massage industry while providing a space to learn/practice from one another.
– Cool –
Experiential Learning
We understand that many therapists have already been working in the medical massage field and built successful practices. Upon review, we allow a percent of your experience to count towards various areas of the required electives.
